Dearne Valley Eco-Schools
Date Posted: June 29, 2011
Funded by the Regional Improvement & Efficiency Program (RIEP) the Dearne Valley Eco-Schools project is an extension of the South Yorkshire Schools Climate Change Project specifically targeting the Dearne Valley region.
It will seek to implement and test the proposals of the recently completed South Yorkshire Schools Climate Change Project Strategy and develop a network of eco-schools to support the Eco-Vision already being implemented across area.
Chief amongst its aims is the plan to ensure that each school in the Dearne Valley region moves up at least one level on the Eco-Schools accreditation ladder and for many this will mean registering for the scheme for the first time and taking initial steps to reducing the environmental impact of their school. Encouragingly, some schools in the region are already part of the Eco-Schools scheme so the aim here will be to progress them to the next stage – Bronze, Silver then Green Flag (the highest commendation) by the end of the project.
To achieve this the South Yorkshire Climate Change Network is offering schools dedicated one to one support. This will take the form of a project office coming into school to implement the necessary procedures to register and progress through the Eco-schools awards. Any school within the Dearne Valley can register to be part of the project to help them take the necessary steps to reduce the environmental impacts of their school and develop their skills as a sustainable citizens.
By ensuring that schools and their pupils in the Dearne Valley are engaged from an early age in sustainable living and learning the Eco-Vision will hopefully be a considerably easier outcome to recognise.
